Louis Bartrand, a "military brat" and the son of a 38-year U.S. Air Force veteran, founded The Wandering I Store in 2017 as part of a project he had started gathering and documenting the stories of military brats from all duty branches. He started designing and selling t-shirts for the military installations he and his family had lived on growing up that no longer existed as a way of funding that project and keeping the memory of those places alive because of his experiences constantly moving and being raised in locations across the U.S. And the world. He came up with the moniker Wandering I Store as a result of his sometimes nomadic upbringing as a military brat, which included frequent relocations to various locations and cultures. He quickly discovered that other veterans and military family members were asking him for clothing to recall the bases where they had once resided or the places to which they had been assigned throughout their service.
