Since May 1988, the Unrau family has been involved in the pet industry. The store that sells Pet Valu at Highbury and Huron was purchased by Paul, the father. Until the store was sold in 1993, the entire family was involved. Ruth Ann, Paul's wife, bought the Oxbury Mall-based pet store Feather's and Fur. Paul and Ruth Ann opened the company in Eastown Plaza at the corner of Dundas Street and First Street in 1998, when the lease came to an end. Southwest Pet has always focused on reptiles. The store quickly became the go-to destination for knowledgeable advice on products and high-quality animals. Southwest Pet continues to attract customers from across Southwestern Ontario and beyond, even in the age of the internet. One of twelve stores worldwide recognized that year, the company won the "Retailer of the Year" award in the competitive category in 2004.
