A group of friends started talking about the idea of taking action against Milwaukee's severe cultural impoverishment in the summer of 1959, motivated by the vibrant cultures of New York and San Francisco. Clair Richardson, a highly eccentric public relations professional who had successfully alienated all of his clients, and Sprague Vonier, the program manager of WTMJ television, were two of these buddies who were resolved to open a beatnik coffeehouse akin to those in San Francisco. With the intention of turning the room into a cafe with beat poetry and perhaps some music, Skylight Music Theatre raised $2,000 for the initial capitalization. Each season, The Skylight Music Theatre presents over 90 performances, garnering recognition around the country for its artistic brilliance, adaptability, and outstanding group productions.
