Established in 1962, Pertronix mainly manufactures driving and fog lamps for the heavy duty market (large rig trucks). In the early 1970s, an engineer came up with the idea of an electronic ignition system that would replace the points and condensers in the dispenser. After applying for patent on this product, Pertronix began to produce Ignitor®, focusing on forklift truck and industrial engine market. The product is widely recognized by fleet managers who recognize significant improvements in reliability and reduced maintenance costs, whether they are responsible for delivery trucks, school buses or generators/industrial engines. Early on, only a few automotive applications were available, but car enthusiasts began to use Ignitor to provide superior performance. Using igniter technology, a complete electronic distributor was developed in 1985 and supplied to wis-con, a major OEM engine manufacturer.
