Affi was inspired to start Freda after seeing in the news that refugees were stranded at different border crossings in Europe. Coming from a refugee family herself, the images struck a chord and she began to consider the practical consequences of displacement. She found that these women did not have access to products during the visit, and that they did not include health supplies provided at the United Nations and relief organizations - social taboos and stigma that make women's menstrual needs ignored in refugee camps and all public Spaces. The more she studied, the more frustrated she became by the impact of the stigma, not only on the availability of these products, but also on the way they are manufactured -- using cheap, unnecessary chemicals that don't require legal disclosure -- and marketed as patronizing! Freda’s goal is to represent something new in the industry, both in the product itself and what they represent.
