After finishing the final Fever Ray tour in 2018 and after Olof Dreijer's return from living in Berlin, Fever Ray initially began working on Radical Romantics in the fall of 2019. They were both working in the Stockholm studios they had built together with their brother and fellow The Knife member. Olof joined Dreijer in working on Radical Romantics sometime in the middle of 2020, co-producing and co-writing the album's lead single, what they call them, which was released in May to a flurry of praise, as well as three additional tracks. The siblings haven't created and written music together in eight years until the songs on Radical Romantics. The Portuguese DJ and producer Ndia, Johannes Berglund, Peder Mannerfelt, and Pär Grindvik's technicolor dance act Aasthma are among the additional co-producers and performers.
