British Sign is a way of spelling words using the movement of the hand. Finger spelling letters are used in sign language to spell the names of people and places without symbols. Finger spelling can also be used to spell words in which the signer does not know the sign of the signature, or to clarify reading symbols that the signer does not know. Finger spelling signs are often incorporated into other signs. For example, the symbol for "gold" is the finger bone "g" and then moves your hand away with a slight movement (see illustration in the online dictionary). British Sign uses the two-handed alphabet, but other sign languages, such as American sign language (ASL), use the one-handed alphabet.
