James and Marthe Gardner founded Beckford Silk in 1975 from their residence in the village's center. The Arts & Crafts movement established workshops in Chipping Campden and other nearby villages at the turn of the century, and their original concept was to make things by hand in the countryside. The primary reason that textile printing, and silk in particular, was chosen over manufacturing in wood, metal, or ceramics was because textiles, and silk in particular, are excellent vehicles for the application of color. The initial years were devoted to research and development and market exploration. James did not receive his first really large order until 1978. One of the early pioneers of heritage retailing, The National Trust gave Beckford Silk the idea to design, hand-print, and produce exclusive textile accessories for the heritage market.
